Knocked up and laid off. What else could possibly go wrong? Kate Martin is about to find out. Unexpectedly pregnant, facing a huge restructuring at her job and doomed to play bridesmaid for her perfect Barbie sister, Kate Martin's world is in turmoil. As a happily married, modestly ambitious editor of a you’ve-never-heard-of-it trade magazine, motherhood would seem to be coming at the perfect time for Katie. But she’s just not sure she’s ready for the Mommy-track. She has career aspirations beyond the crappy little magazine where she works, U.S. Water Works, and editing fun and informative articles like ‘When Sump Pumps Go Bad,’ and ‘Wastewater and You Win-Win or No-No?’ She’s not sure these goals will mesh with diapers and lullabies and the selfless, 24/7 world of being a mom. It’s not that she doesn't want to be a mom; she just doesn’t want to be one right now. Why can’t ovaries have ‘pause’ buttons? Like biological Tivo. Add to this the horror of the wearing a Barney-purple, Scarlett O-Hara-ready bridesmaid’s dress at perfect baby sister Melanie’s wedding. And the anniversary party for her parents Katie has been saddled with planning. Parents who, like a couple of sullen teenagers, seem most concerned about having an open bar. But the real question is, will she even have a job? In a time of downsizing and cutbacks, Katie fears that, the larger her belly grows, so does the target on her back.

No Kidding Romi Carrell Wittman 9781492233664 Books

In "No Kidding", Romi Carrell Wittman's first self-published novel, her main character, Katie, finds herself unexpectedly pregnant. If that weren't stressful enough, she suspects her employer of trying to get rid of her. Paranoia? Maybe not.
Although the theme is serious, the book is laugh-out-loud funny. Wittman weaves blatant discrimination, family dysfunction and working motherhood into a hilarious tale without ever making light of it. Katie has to navigate the minefield of pregnancy while confronting her fears about what it means to be a working mother. What will become of my career? What about my hopes and dreams? Where did my waist go? If all Katie had to deal with was saving her career, that would be hard enough but family drama unfolds as Katie's spoiled little sister plans her over-the-top wedding from hell. Just when Katie thinks it can't get any worse, her biggest career fears come true and a near-tragedy that she never could've imagined forces her to re-evaluate her priorities.
Dripping with wisecracking sarcasm, quick wit and tearful realities, "No Kidding" explores the evolution of working motherhood that many of us face each day.

No Kidding Romi Carrell Wittman 9781492233664 Books Reviews

Kate Martin. Editor for U.S. Water Works, a trade magazine you’ve never heard of. Happily married to Joe, a man who looks good in his package delivery uniform. Mother to three furry dogs. A nice, uneventful, simple life. Everything like clockwork, until her period was not. Not only is the pregnancy unexpected, but her employer is restructuring various positions, which means Kate may find herself without a job. Knocked up and laid off? Could this get any worse?

Romi Carrell Wittman’s novel about a potentially downtrodden mother-to-be was a hysterical read! I know, that sounds like an oxymoron of sorts, but trust me, this book is a bonafide page turner. Kate plays first time pregnant lady to a T, full of concerns and angst when it comes to changing poopy diapers, and don’t even get her started on breastfeeding. How does that work, again? Lending comic relief is her extended family; a mother whose biggest concern is having an open bar at her anniversary party, sisters who get Kate’s goat and won’t let up, a father who sits idly by and watches the drama with a smile on his face. What you’ll discover, though, is an undercurrent of love. No matter how crazy they make each other, there is a whole lot of love.

An added bonus politics in the work place. No Kidding touches a bit on this, when referencing Kate’s pregnancy and how this pertains to her job security. Is that why her job is in danger? Can an employer let someone go due to familial status? Isn’t that illegal? Brace yourself for the stand-off between Kate and U.S. Water Works.

Wittman has comedic timing. This shows not only in the story, but also in the way she’s written her characters. Kate says what’s on everyone’s mind (even if we are too afraid to admit to it). If you want a fun read, I suggest you give this book a try.

No kidding!

**Thanks to Romi Carrell Wittman for the book in exchange for an honest review.**
I'm generally not into the whole "struggles of becoming a mother - making career and family work - woe is me life is so hard - type story, so this book sat in my kindle library for a while until I was in the mood to give it a shot. I'm so happy that kindle unlimited makes it possible to take chances on books that you aren't sure about. I was caught up in the story from the first page. I just couldn't put it down. I don't know if it was the characters or the intensely personal writing style, but I felt like I was living this story. I'd love to see a follow up, because I feel like the story is just beginning.

Kate Martin is pregnant, her baby sister is bridezilla, and her professional life is up in the air and life is a little crazy. This book is the story of how Kate must deal with all the stress while on the verge of welcoming her first child that she isn't quite sure she is ready for.

A lot of books share the joys of pregnancy and impending motherhood and this one felt real. I loved how honest the character Kate was about her fears and insecurities and how unsure she was about the whole becoming a mother thing. I loved that it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows and beautiful onesies! I did think that this book was chock full of drama, at times maybe a little too much and a little amped up. I couldn't believe that she had all these things going on at once and was trying to juggle it all.
No Kidding by Romi Carrell Wittman is a cute romp through the life of an expectant mother. Nary a page went by without me snorting with laughter, or at least chuckling.

Buy this book If you like dogs, babies, and other sundry cuteness.
Don't buy this book If you're expecting dinosaurs, lasers, or zombies.
What did I learn from this book? Stuff about the childbirth experience. And breastfeeding. And trying to juggle the competing and often contradictory demands of expectant motherhood, career woman, spouse, sister, daughter, and all of the other roles the modern woman steps into and out of many times throughout her day. Scary stuff.

But here's what I really learned being a man is easy, compared to what today's women go through. Way easy,

Wittman's narrator lays it all down child delivery, office politics, family politics, maternity leave, married life, bodily functions. You feel for the narrator she's funny and fierce, but has her doubts will she make a good mother? She's great at what she does, but will the backwards thinking of others kill her career? And what about her mother's health, and her sister's upcoming wedding?

And did she really just use the phrase 'camel toe'?

This first book from a wonderful new author is a true gem. I look forward to everything else she has to say.
